Florida Nirvana fans won't believe this divorce twist

Many readers are aware that Francis Bean Cobain (daughter of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain) is heading for divorce court. What some Florida residents may be shocked to learn is the extent to which the young woman's husband of not even two years feels should be his as part of the divorce. The case serves as an example of the importance of having a solid prenuptial agreement in place and of taking an aggressive legal stance in protecting one's interests during a divorce.

Francis Bean Cobain inherited one of her father's acoustic guitars after his death. Fans of the band Nirvana know that Kurt Cobain killed himself with a single gunshot wound as the band was at its peak of acclaim. The guitar in question is believed to be the last instrument that Cobain played before his death, and it is insured at a value of $1 million. Estimates place the actual value at several times that amount.

Francis Bean Cobain was savvy in asking her husband to sign a prenuptial agreement before the couple wed. That agreement serves to protect Cobain's inherited assets from loss in the event of a divorce. Her estranged husband is seeking the guitar based on his claim that it was a wedding gift and, therefore, excluded from the assets covered in the prenup.

The case has yet to go to court, and the outcome is yet to be determined. It is possible that the action is little more than a ploy to convince Cobain to pay a greater share of spousal support. There is no doubt that the guitar has sentimental value to Cobain as well as a high monetary value. If the parties are unable to reach an agreement on the matter, Florida readers may get some insight into the value of having a prenuptial agreement in place prior to heading down the aisle.
