Preparing to keep your future marriage strong

by | Oct 20, 2015 | Family Law

If you have recently become engaged, you are likely preoccupied with planning your wedding. Wedding planning is important, as your wedding symbolizes the joining of your life with your partner’s life. However, it is also important to plan for your future marriage. Sometimes it is easy to get so distracted by wedding planning that you neglect to plan for the future health and strength of your marriage overall.

When planning for your future marriage, you may benefit from drafting a prenuptial agreement with the help of an experienced family law attorney. The stigmas once tied to prenuptial agreements are all but extinct, given the fact that these legal documents can actually help to strengthen marriages, as opposed to simply protecting parties in the event of divorce.

When you sit down with your partner to discuss any potential issues which may be governed by your prenuptial agreement, you essentially compel yourselves to confront potential marital stressors before they have the opportunity to wreak havoc on your marriage. For example, it is well understood that most couples tend to fight about money. If you and your partner address your expectations and boundaries concerning money during the drafting process, you will become more informed about the other’s financial values and will be less likely to fight about money after you are married.

There is nothing wrong with preoccupation with wedding planning. Your wedding day will hopefully be a day to be treasured. However, it is important that you not become so distracted by wedding planning that you neglect to plan for all the days that will occur in your marriage after the day in which you will say “I do.”
