A great many readers are familiar with the hit television show “Big Bang Theory.” The female star of that show, Kaley Cuoco, has made recent headlines over her divorce from her husband Ryan Sweeting, a professional tennis player. During that divorce, Sweeting sought a portion of Cuoco’s sizable fortune. Her rock-solid prenuptial agreement, however, prevented him from prevailing, which should serve as a lesson to all Florida residents who are preparing to wed.
Cuoco’s television contract is worth a reported $72 million. However, Sweeting will only receive $365,000, according to divorce paperwork that the couple filed. He is also entitled to keep any cash or gift certificates that he brought into the marriage.
The actress will retain both of the couple’s homes. Sweeting had asked for spousal support as part of the divorce, but it appears that he was unsuccessful in that attempt. It is reported that the prenuptial agreement that was in place at the time of the marriage was able to shield Cuoco’s earnings from loss during the property division portion of the divorce.
For those in Florida who are getting ready to walk down the aisle, it is important to understand that prenuptial agreements are not only for the rich and famous. Anyone who brings assets into a marriage should consider how to best protect that wealth from loss if the relationship ends. In addition, a prenup can outline if and how spousal support would be handled, which can make a divorce far easier to negotiate if the need should arise.
