Florida residents won’t learn more about Abedin/Weiner divorce

by | Jan 11, 2018 | Property Division

High profile political couple Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner have made headlines for many years. The couple was recently in the news over their decision to withdraw their divorce petition. While many Florida readers may be shocked at that news, the withdrawal is not an indication that the couple plans to reunite. The move is simply an attempt to secure a measure of privacy for their young son.

Once a respected congressman, Anthony Weiner has been the center of various sexting scandals dating back many years. His long-suffering wife, Huma Abedin, stood by his side through many of those scandals, even after Weiner admitted wrongdoing. Most recently, Weiner was sentenced to a 21 month prison sentence for sending sexually charged messages to a teenage girl.

That was apparently the straw that broke the camel’s back, and Abedin filed for divorce last year. The parties made numerous attempts to conceal the details of their divorce proceeding from the public eye. Those efforts, however, were denied by the judge handling the matter.

That left the couple with little choice but to withdraw their divorce petition and attempt to settle the details of their divorce privately. If they are able to reach a settlement outside of court, the public will receive no additional details on their marriage, finances or other personal matters. For many Florida parents, the urge to keep these matters private is easy to understand and relate to. Their son will already be able to read about his father’s actions in archived news stories, and having private details of his parents’ divorce would only make matters even more complicated.
